Our Senior Resettlement Consultant in Wellington, Marina Fontein is a social researcher who specialises in the experience of immigration and re-settlement. During her time with On Arrival, Marina has successfully assisted many new families who now call Wellington home.
Born and bred in Wellington, Marina has good knowledge of the central city and has also lived in the Hutt Valley and on the Kapiti Coast. In 2011, Marina graduated from Victoria University with a Master of Arts (Applied) in Social Science Research. In 2012 and 2013, Marina received awards from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage which enable her to continue her research into historical immigration in Wellington.
Marina has also travelled extensively, and has first-hand experience herself of the challenges that relocation brings to individuals and families. In 2010, Marina moved to rural Germany with her husband and young children. She talks about this time:
I’ll never forget arriving in a quiet village in the middle of the German countryside where we knew no-one. It was a Sunday, everything was closed, and new ways of doing things seemed incomprehensible. Where would we sleep that night, and how would we console our homesick children?
This experience has given Marina considerable insight into the challenges also faced by new arrivals in Wellington.
