Reopening of the Skilled Migrant Category

This popular residence pathway via employment is a fortnightly, points-based selection process of "Expressions Of Interest" (EOI), followed with, an invitation to apply for residence. Points are counted for age, qualifications, work experience, and a skilled job in New Zealand. Bonus points are also available for certain criteria.

Next EOI selection

The next selection occurs on 12 November 2022 and will include all existing EOIs as well as any EOI entered before that date, meeting 160 points. The majority of applicants require a job offer in New Zealand to reach the threshold.

Points increase early 2023

After 9 November, the threshold will increase to 180 points. EOIs will be selected again on 18 January 2023. The threshold increase will only affect EOIs after 9 November 2022. The first half of 2023 will see a monthly selection of EOIs meeting 180 points or more.

Future changes

The Government will commence consultation works on a simplified points system for this category. These changes will not be implemented until mid-2023 at the earliest.
